Art & Design Intervention
Hi,
We are students of Liverpool John Moores University, as part of the Collaborative Practice Module in Masters course, we are trying to create an Urban intervention in a public space (i.e., Sefton Park). For this, we join hands together from different disciplines such as M.Res, MA Fine Arts, MA Urban Design and so on.

Proposal Brief
An Act of Love
As part of our Collaborative Practice Module in Master's course, we, the students of Liverpool John Moores University, developed an idea of urban intervention using an existing feature in a public space.
For this, we chose the Anteros fountain located at Sefton Park in the city of Liverpool, as we found that the mythological character above the fountain was hardly recognized by the public.
Our ideas to reactivate the statue includes bringing the missing arrow back to the statue, creating a sound tower with recordings of verses and stories, and also, by promoting events around the statue.

Linda Jones
Linda Jones is completing an MRes in Art and Design at Liverpool John Moores University. As an undergraduate in 2012 Linda worked on The Liverpool Doors exhibition, where her roles involved assisting Bill Longshaw with the curation and installation of the exhibition, as well as painting several doors - including the Seagull Door- a door that once belonged in Arthur Dooley’s studio. The exhibition, which opened at The Museum of Liverpool in March 2012 also presented the poetry of Roger McGough alongside installation. This led her to ask the question: ‘How does one become successful and well known as an artist/poet’ This helped form the research question for her MRes thesis entitled, How the Liverpool poets gained success in 1967. Since graduating from University in 2012, Linda has taken part in two exhibitions at the Baltic Creative; one for ‘Light Night’ entitled Looking towards the New World (2015) and one entitled Superhuman (2015). She has also produced reviews for the publication World Film Locations, Liverpool, (Connolly and Whelan, 2013) on the films Shirley Valentine (1989) and Waterfront (1950). On completion of the MRes, Linda Intends to progress to PhD level.
Artist Statement
For this exhibition Linda has thought of using a piece of poetry that was performed and written by one of the Liverpool Scene Poets - Adrian Henri. There are two poems she has chosen to recite because they deal with the theme of Love. Adrian Henri first performed his poetry in the early to middle 60’s. The style of poetry is different to the type of academic poetry read in schools. It was the Liverpool Poets desire to bring poetry to the people in a way that had not been thought of previously. This resulted in their work being published in one of the bestselling poetry anthologies of all time called the Mersey Sound, by Penguin in 1967. Love is is included in this anthology. Linda has chosen this because of it’s down to earth treatment of the subject matter which the Liverpool Poets are famous for.

Angelo Madonna
Angelo Madonna has a background in nautical science and mechanical engineering, followed by an education in fine art, sculpture and new media. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in
Education (PGCE) – Art, Design and Technology (2010-2013); and a BA (2004-2007) in Sculpture (Camberwell College of Art, London).
His work explores the effective potentialities emerging from the relationship between objects and humans; how objects trigger our emotional responses and memories; and how these are played out through our locations and dis-locations in space. His approach to Art making is highly multidisciplinary to include Computer Aided Design technology, sculpture, installation, site-specific interventions, photography and performance.
He has presented his work in various site-specific venues in Liverpool, London and Italy and he is now increasingly interested in fostering collaborations with galleries, curators and cultural institutions eager to explore the relationship between art, science, technology and education.
2018 on- going: Postgraduate MA Fine Art at LJMU (John Moore University) Liverpool.
Artist Statement
The prospect that my art research could develop into an urban intervention has fascinated me
for a long time and since I moved to Liverpool this idea has become bigger and stronger. In the last two years I have explored many areas of the city of Liverpool particularly the docks and few parks around the area where I live.
An “Act of Love” is collaboration between the Fine Arts, Urban Design and Creative Writings Departments of John Moore University. The aim is to produce a public work/event where existing statues within parks can be re-activated and transformed in new contemporary devices/sculpture for participatory situations with members of the public. The collaborative creative and research process of the artists involved consists of identifying the effective potentialities of these statues and exploring how these can be employed to re-engage the public with their intrinsic symbolic meaning. We call these creative strategies and processes ‘re-activations’.
The first re-activation will start with the mythological statue of Anteros, the Greek god of Selfless love located in Sefton Park, Liverpool that has lost his arrow. It is my intention to redesign
the arrow that is currently missing from the statue using light – tube-light or laser - and other materials. Once the work will be completed as a team we will organize a series of micro events around the theme of love. I hope that these events will inspire more collaborative practices and motivate the public to join in creatively. I personally think that the role of an artist today is to question how spaces are used and encourage more collaborative and participatory activities.

Sneha Madhu
Sneha Madhu, student of MA Urban Design at Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool.
She graduated as an Architect from India in the year 2018; also, she has gained some experience in the real world of architecture and construction. She has always been keen about working on public projects. During her bachelor’s in India, she had opportunities to be part of organizing various events in the university as well as around the city.
Right after completing her undergraduate study, she persuaded to do her masters in Urban Design, as she was always keen about understanding and learning about how cities are designed. She chose Liverpool, for its rich heritage and historical background. According to her, it was the best option, to start exploring about cities outside India.
Role in this proposal:
As an urban designer, she has always looked forward to work with public engaging proposals and projects. This proposal provides her an opportunity to engage with artists, creative writers, and the general public, which in turn opens up her career horizon. Although, she has had various experience of working in collaboration as an architect, this is one of its kinds, an out of the box concept; as she has very less experience in working with artists and creative writers.
For this proposal, she plays a role of a designer, who tries to bring in ideas to reactivate an existing element in a public park of the city that is neglected by the community. Also, she looks into the practicality of the art and design solutions, in various terms, such as safety of the public, permissions from statutory bodies governing the space, determining the possible locations for intervention around the park, and so on.
